Pilgrim of Saint James. Stage 9 – 55 Km.
From Lalín (Pontevedra) or O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela.
Bicigrinos Santiago Bikes, last stage. The most important of the Camino way to Santiago … the last. Gone are the experiences of many days of Camino, an experience that will leave its own mark on our own existence.
On the tracks of fallen leaves, among the last spots of eucalyptus and oaks, arrive the last villages of O Pino.
Only 20 km already, compared to almost 1,000 completed since our first day in Seville. Far, far away, there are already the Mediterranean forests, the farms populated by rockroses and oaks, the pasture of Extremadura, the vast Castilian plateau and its extensive plains, and even the mountains of León and the legendary O Cebreiro, which we crossed yesterday .
A monolith carved with the staff, pumpkin and scallop announces the entrance to the municipality of Santiago. We skirt the perimeter of the airport, leaving several lines of beacons on the left, and enter San Paio.
By asphalted track, a comfortable climb ends in the awaited Monte do Gozo. From this point we get the first view of Santiago and its Cathedral.
Bicigrinos Santiago Bikes, finally, we enter the Arch of the Palace through a passage, to access the Plaza del Obradoiro, where our adventure ends. While we are heading to the very center of the square, we discover every detail of the western facade. It is hard not to get excited. Arriving in Santiago de Compostela as a pilgrim is an unparalleled experience … few trips are comparable to this one.
The Cathedral represents the culmination of the Way and the apostle rests on it, which causes hundreds of thousands of people to undertake year after year a journey full of fatigue and experiences that will become lifelong memories.
After climbing the steps of the cathedral, admiring the Portico de la Gloria, hugging the Saint and descending to his tomb, the vast majority goes to the Pilgrim’s Office. It is in the Rúa do Vilar, very close to the source of the Platerías. We will wait our turn, we will fill out a small form, we will put the stamp of Santiago on the credential and they will give us, if we want, the Compostela.
