Pilgrim of Saint James. Stage 1 from Sevilla to Fuente de Cantos (Badajoz). 135 Km.

Begining the way of Saint James from Santiponce, the ruins of Itálica, towards La Algaba, a grove of eucalyptus trees on the left gives way to a wide Emasesa service track: an endless straight line without trees, between supposed cotton fields, with Guillena on the horizon.

After leaving Guillena on the Burguillos road, we take the Royal Cañada de las Islas. With a series of soft slides, begins a stretch of olive grove in comfortable but continuous ascent in our first contact with the Sierra Norte de Sevilla. With the first port of the Vía de la Plata, the olive grove gives way to the Mediterranean forest, populated by oaks, cistus and chaparros. An extraordinary landscape and the silence that floods it provide us with a unique moment of recollection.

In parallel to the A-8002, we reached Castilblanco de los Arroyos. At the exit of the village, a long and heavy stretch along the SE-185 gives us 15 km of continuous ascent surrounded by cork oaks and pastures of cattle, until the entrance of the Natural Park los Berrocales. We cross this natural and hunting reserve that finishes with a strong rise in the Cerro del Calvario, a magnificent watchtower over Almadén de la Plata that gives us a fantastic panoramic view.

Pilgrim to Santiago Stage 1

Until the Real de la Jara, we will find innumerable gates that we will leave as we find. Between Holm oaks, we will reach the La Postura Farm; a path between cistus and holm oaks will take us to cross over the stream of the Viper; and in slight rise along this channel, the path takes us to the Arroyo Mateos farm. After the farm, in 4 km practically flat, a wide track will take us to El Real de la Jara, the last Andalusian village on the route.

With the view in the castle that dominates the town, you leave the Real de la Jara to take the wide rope of Monesterio. Soon we crossed the limit of the province of Seville and we entered Badajoz, where we are surprised by the ruins of the castle of the Towers.

Surrounded by oaks, cork oaks and chaparros, the day concludes with the reunion with the N-630, whose trail we lost in Santiponce. A climb of 3.5 km, with the N-630 on our right, places us at the top of the port of La Cruz, which serves as an entrance to Monesterio.

Enjoy the way of Saint James with bikes.
